What this actually does
A grill mat sits under the cooker and catches everything that falls: rendered fat, marinade, ash, and the drips that come off the bottom of the cabinet after a cook. On a deck it stops staining and reduces the fire risk from grease-soaked wood. On a patio it saves concrete and pavers from the dark halo that never quite washes out. On grass, an insulating pad breaks the radiant heat path that scorches turf.
The important distinction is between a mat that resists heat and one that insulates against it. A thin silicone-coated fiberglass sheet will shrug off splashes but conducts heat straight through to the surface below. A thicker fire-resistant pad with a real air or fiber layer does the insulating job as well.

How long it lasts and how to care for it
Two to four seasons. Replace sooner if the surface has gone brittle, cracked or lost its non-slip backing.
- Hose or wipe the mat down at the same time you empty the drip tray, not at the end of the season.
- Lift the mat occasionally and check the surface underneath — a mat that traps moisture against wood causes its own problems.
- Store it flat or loosely rolled; folding a silicone-coated mat creates permanent creases that crack.
- Never place a mat directly on top of dry leaves or long grass, which defeats the insulating purpose.
